The music.
The term gothic entered heavy metal music with the release of Paradise Lost’s ‘Gothic’ album in 1991.
The music of gothic metal is generally characterised by its dark atmosphere. The adjective "dark" is commonly used to describe gothic music in general while other terms that are less frequently used include deep, depressing, romantic, passionate and intense. Gothic metal has also been described as "a combination of the darkness and melancholy of goth rock with heavy metal".
The piano usually introduce the songs. The guitar riffs are slow and oppressive.
How to use the darkness to illuminate your mind.

The lyrics are substantially focused on Gothic litherature and on the dualism love-death. The pain for an impossible love.
"This world is a cruel place, and we're here only to lose. So before life tears us apart, let death bless me with you " HIM - Join me in Death.
The atmosphere is melancholy, oppressive downfall.


The origins.
Goth metal is a subgenre of heavy metal with goth rock (dark music), death metal and doom metal influences.
In real, there are many differences between this genres and the goth metal, expecially with heavy metal.
The heavy metal genre is typically associated with aggression, sexism and masculinity in contrast to the "softer" and "more feminine" character of the gothic music.
We can back in 1970 to see a band that publish their first album and can be considered “a gothic root”, precursors of goth metal;
wich band ? Black Sabbath.

Other bands will follow like Dio, Rainbow and Judas Priest. All this bands can be considered like precursors of Gothic Rock.

In the first album of Iron Maiden we can find some gothic lyrics in ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ song.
Gothic Rock had emerged as an offshoot of post-punk in the 1980s but by the end of that decade, the genre had splintered into different directions with bands such as The Cure and Siouxsie & the Banshees incorporating “more pop and alternative elements" while The Systers of Mercy, Fields of the Nemilim and Christian Death took on a "heavier, sometimes metal-influenced approach”.
In this scenario in U.k. in 1991 the band Paradise Lost (from death-doom metal) publish their second album named “Gothic” that contains all the characteristic of the actual Goth Metal (male growl voice with clear female voice and keyboards) as in U.S.A the band Type O Negative.

The Beauty and the Beast.
The term "beauty and the beast" refers to an aesthetic contrasting "angelic" female vocals with male growls or aggressive singing. Paradise Lost and The Gathering had already made use of this technique on some songs from their earlier albums but it was the Norwegians Theatre of Tragedy that first released an entire album devoted to this approach with their self-titled debut in 1995.

Now.
The Goth Metal is changed from the 1991. In many cases it left some doom metal sounds.
There are many bands playing this genre and there are sub-genre too (Love Metal, Symphonic Goth Metal, Romantic Goth Metal and so on).
Such as : Whitin Temptation, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Epica, Midnattsol, Lacrimosa, Sirenia, After Forever, Tristania, Lullacry and many others.

Tomorrow.
The Gothic music is still changing. New bands comes and the sounds evolves. There are discussion about if the band Evanescence can be considered Gothic Metal.
Personally i think that a song is not much different from a paint. Dont matter how the artist use the stencil, the important is the feelings he can show.
So, welcome to all new bands and sounds, but the atmosphere and the theme should remain the same to be Gothic.

Theater of Tragedy, that reminds me that i have some songs from them somewhere that i used to listen, have to dig them up.

I dont really keep Nightwish or Evanescence as Goth metal. Type O Negative and 69 Eyes are more Goth metal to me.

I dont know much about metal scene in Italy but i know that some good metal bands come from there so it should have pretty healthy scene
In Finland metal music is pretty much main stream now, almost all radiostations play metal music.

Its true. Nightwish are more like symphonic metal, like Within Temptation and Epica.
But Nightwish lyrics can be classified as gothic, thinking at Nemo for example.
Imo, Evanescence is a great band and Amy Lee is awsome, but they are not properly gothic.

In Italy the only band can be mentioned are Lacuna Coil. Great band.

Interesting, I lived through the post punk era and the earliest incarnation of anything labeled as goth that I can recall was bands like Bauhaus and Killing Joke, in a way I guess from a punk perspective Siouxsie was the mother of the genre with their debut album The Scream, though I guess she would hate being called that . The cure wouldn't have come close to fit the definition at the time, dark and moody yes but from a music perspective not heavy enough, they could be the fathers of emo lol

Goth Metal I didn't have a clue about until this thread, watched a few videos and was surprised to find I quite liked it so thank you for sharing!

Just for bragging rights : Back in the mid 80s I used to go to the same nightclub as the singer from Skunk Anansie, in fact we have a mutual friend although our paths have never crossed outside of beer stained floors.
